WHAT IS PROFOUND?
Profound is a radiofrequency microneedling device that uses heat energy to stimulate the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. Those naturally occurring compounds help keep your skin firm, smooth, and wrinkle-free. Your body starts to make less of them once you hit your 20s, and there’s no natural way to make more.

HOW IS PROFOUND BETTER THAN OTHER SKIN TIGHTENING TREATMENTS?
Every day it seems there’s a new skin tightening treatment out there. Dr. Miller feels the Profound system is superior for two reasons. First, it combines microneedling with RF energy. Second, because the RF energy is delivered through the needles directly into the dermis, there isn’t any warming or harm to the epidermis. This can be a problem with other RF procedures. It’s very difficult to heat the dermis to a temperature that is effective and still maintain safe temperatures for the skin surface.
Profound uses very small needles (200 microns wide) that can be set to various penetration depths, from 0.5 to 3.5 mm. Different levels of the dermis can be treated in different passes, and it accommodates varying skin and dermis depths in different areas. The microneedles are insulated, and the RF energy is emitted from the end of each needle. This delivers the RF energy directly into the dermis without having to travel through (and damage) the epidermis. Generally, the further RF energy must travel through tissue, the more pain is involved.
Adding microneedling to RF energy delivery has its own set of advantages. Penetration of the epidermis with Profound’s microneedles stimulate fibroblasts in the skin to produce collagen (wound response). Plus, topical therapeutics can be applied to the skin after the procedure and can be delivered more deeply through the microscopic holes than they can when applied to the surface normally.

IS PROFOUND AN FDA-CLEARED TREATMENT?

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT FROM A PROFOUND TREATMENT?
These are intended as single treatments. To gain FDA clearance, Candela, the maker of Profound, conducted clinical studies on the effects from these treatments. Their results of these studies are impressive. For wrinkle reduction, 100% of respondents agreed that Profound treatments improved their wrinkles. For skin laxity, 95% of patients said they saw a noticeable change in skin firmness. For cellulite improvement, the rate was 94%.
Your results from Profound are not immediate. There is some instant remodeling of the existing collagen across the treated areas, but the real changes come as the body produces new supplies of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid and sends them to the treated areas to “heal” the perceived wounds, even though there aren’t any actual wounds at all. You’ll start to see results as soon as two or three weeks, but these will really build between three to nine months after your treatment.
IS THERE ANY PREPARATION FOR A PROFOUND NON-SURGICAL FACELIFT?

YOUR PROFOUND NON-SURGICAL FACELIFT PROCEDURE
Dr. Miller will apply a topical anesthetic to your face to maximize your comfort. Then he’ll treat your target areas using the Profound device. The microneedles will penetrate between two and four millimeters into your skin, then deliver the heat energy in bursts about four seconds long.
The procedure will take about 45 minutes. You should only need one treatment to eliminate wrinkles and see marked improvements in skin volume and elasticity. Profound patients report a 100% response rate for facial wrinkles.
Profound also involves no downtime. You can drive yourself home after your treatment. You will experience some redness and swelling that should last no longer than a week. One to two days after your procedure, you can cover any red or swollen areas with makeup.
IS THERE RECOVERY AFTER A PROFOUND FACELIFT TREATMENT?
There isn’t any real recovery after these treatments. Yes, you’ll have some slight swelling and redness across the treatment sites. You may have some mild bruising. This passes in a couple of days. Dr. Miller advises his patients to take it easy for the first day after their Profound treatment, and that’s about it. These are completely non-invasive procedures.
DOES TREATMENT HURT?
There’s no need to worry about experiencing pain during your Profound non-surgical facelift. You’ll receive a topical anesthetic or an injection of a local anesthetic before your treatment begins. Dr. Miller will also check in with you throughout the process to make sure you’re comfortable.
Some patients report feeling a gentle warming sensation during their appointment. Others say that they noticed light pressure as the device was pressed into their skin. Regardless, the Profound non-surgical facelift is generally very tolerable.
