There are several ways to get rid of the stubborn fat that’s been bothering you. You can choose between liposuction, the gold-standard procedure for body contouring, and non-surgical treatments such as CoolSculpting®. Here’s how these two different options stack up in terms of:

• How they work: Liposuction involves small incisions that allow a thin tube to break up unwanted fat and suction it out. A newer version of liposuction called SmartLipo adds gentle laser energy to this process to enhance the procedure. Meanwhile, CoolSculpting uses cryolipolysis, a technique that makes the fat cells so cold that they freeze and die.

• Effectiveness and results: Liposuction offers dramatic and immediate results. It only requires one procedure and can remove up to 11 pounds or 6,000 ml of fat. CoolSculping can eliminate up to 20 to 25 percent of fat cells in the treatment area. However, most patients need multiple sessions scheduled across several months.

• Recovery time: CoolSculpting typically involves little to no downtime. However, patients may experience temporary redness, bruising, cramping, and other side effects. Liposuction recovery takes about three to five days. There can be lingering effects, such as swelling, for several months. You’ll continue to see better results during this time.
• Cost: Patients often assume that non-surgical treatments have much lower price tags than surgical procedures. However, that’s not always the case. According to the CoolSculpting website, a personalized treatment plan typically costs between $2,000 and $4,000. At our practice, SmartLipo costs $2,799 for the first treatment area and $999 for each additional treatment area. For traditional liposuction, we charge $3,900 for the first area and $1,200 for each additional area. Financing is also available.
