While liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the U.S., there are many common misconceptions about the procedure. Good liposuction candidates have realistic expectations for the treatment, so it is important to set the record straight on some common liposuction questions.
If you are considering liposuction, schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Stephen Miller, our board-certified plastic surgeon. In your consultation, Dr. Miller will answer your questions about lipo. He will also assess your anatomy and treatment goals to determine if liposuction is the best option for you.
Will Liposuction Help me Lose Weight?
Liposuction is not a weight loss treatment and is not a substitute for living a healthy, active life.
The idea that liposuction helps you lose weight is a major source of confusion among potential lipo patients. Technically, you will lose the one to ten pounds of fat that Dr. Miller removes. However, the procedure is not intended to remove considerable amounts of fat for the purpose of lowering the number you see on the scale.
Instead, liposuction is a body contouring method. The procedure is intended for patients who have attained a healthy weight but want to eliminate localized fat pockets that won’t respond to their weight loss efforts.
It is also important to note that the procedure does not prevent weight gain at the treated site or any other area of the body. If you don’t establish and maintain healthy habits, you can expect to gain weight.
Will Liposuction Get Rid of my Cellulite?
No, liposuction does not improve the appearance of cellulite.
Cellulite is the result of an interaction between fat deposits and your body’s connective tissue. When fat presses up against the connective tissue, it results in the dimpling of the skin. Lipo cannot affect the connective tissue to eliminate existing dimpling.
An alternative treatment called Cellulaze® has been found to minimize the appearance of cellulite. Dr. Miller may recommend this procedure if you are concerned about cellulite.
Will I see Results Immediately with Liposuction?
No, you will see your results within one to three months after your treatment.
You may think that once fat is removed from your body, you can slip right into that outfit you’ve been wanting to wear. However, it’s important to remember that liposuction is a surgical procedure, which means your body is going to need some time to recover and heal.
It is normal to experience swelling and fluid retention after lipo. You will need to wear a compression garment after your surgery to help minimize these symptoms. You may even feel like you have gained weight in the treated area. Rest assured that these symptoms will gradually fade over the following months, and you will be feeling and looking your best before you know it.
